Week Two

I feel so thoroughly indoctinated with R.S. stuff that I can hardly stand it!  Here we go with more stuff.

I enjoyed watching the Neil Gaiman’s Make Good Art video which was made mention on Early Word.  Still mucking about and not loving the design of the Stop You're Killing Me website. No new mysteries discovered yet.

Assignment One:
Read it.  Nice.

Assignment Two:
Let me tell you, using appeal phrases, about two books that I love:
  • Freddy & Fredericka by Mark Helprin
This whimsical faux epic tells the tale of a Charles-like Prince of Wales and his disco loving Diana-like Princess of Wales who, after repeatedly embarrassing the monarchy, are forced to re-take the American colonies to order to earn their right to win back the throne of England. Humor and rich intelligent diction weave a satire of American politics, healthcare, and society and beautiful characters are so well developed that you like them even as you guffaw at their stupidity.
  • Silence of the Lambs by Tom Harris
Dark Noir mystery that evokes graphic violence without being too specifically bloody.  Harris' brooding villians and tormented detective make for a fast paced and clever invention that leaves the reader terrified but not grossed out.  Harris writes mystery horror in the way that Hitchcock filmed psycho:  it is more what is implied than what is shown and the subtle plot layers in ways that keep the reader riveted.
Assignment Three:
Lori Henshaw liked Louise Erdrich's The Round House on her blog so I commented on it and recommended David Gutterson's Snow Falling on Cedars.   I also recommended the Lord Foul's Bane series to Justin Hartzell since he like a title in Martin's Game of Thrones series on his blog.
